A so-called rotator cuff tear means that tendons have torn off the bone insertion. This leads to pain and a loss of strength when lifting the arm. Since torn tendons cannot heal by themselves and increase over time, surgical treatment is necessary. Smaller tendon tears can be treated arthroscopically; larger tears require open surgery.

Rotator cuff tears, which cannot be treated arthroscopically anymore but are not yet too large, can be repaired in a so-called mini-open repair: (Illustrations 1-6 left).
