Severe wear and tear makes it impossible to save the metatarsal phalangeal joint; stiffening is required. The functional results of this procedure are very good. When healed up, full weight-bearing is possible and rolling off is free of pain.
This procedure is performed on an out-patient or short-term in-patient basis. It lasts 50 minutes. In a special post-op shoe which offloads the forefoot, immediate weight-bearing is possible. Patients need to wear the shoe for six weeks; the screws can be removed after six months.
